A True Humanitarian Venture: Drinking Water for All

Sammanthurai, a town located in the Ampara district within the eastern province of Sri Lanka is known for its agriculture and dry climate. During the dry season, the rural area of the region faces severe issues caused by inaccessibility of drinking water. This prevailing issue caught the attention of afi cares as people spoke of the difficulties they face to procure sufficient water to sustain their daily lives. A basic human need that is unmet for many in the region that should be duly addressed and resolved – that is what afi cares successfully fulfilled through this project.

With the aid of local organizations within the region, afi selected four families who were in dire need of affordable drinking water facilities. After speaking with the region’s water board, the team successfully obtained connections to the four homes. The project went beyond simply procuring the connection through the waterboard towards ensuring that the water pipelines are properly installed and connected to each home. The team closely monitored the progress of implementing the water connections one by one until its successful conclusion.

A project that identifies human needs and duly addresses it for the betterment of society; a project that uplifts the lives of others; a project that ensured the fulfillment of the right to adequate standard of living as stated by article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). We are proud of the team behind this great cause who have made it possible for families to meet their daily necessities and ensure the fulfillment of their basic human rights.

The project while aligning to numerous articles stipulated within international covenants and declarations, also aligns with the sustainable development goals (SDG), primarily SDG 06: Clean Water and Sanitation by providing equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all. Furthermore, it ensures the supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduces the number of people suffering from water scarcity. The SDG 03: Good Health and Well-being as access to clean water reduces the risk of waterborne diseases.

This initiative embodies afi cares commitment to helping communities and improving their quality of life. It is proof of our team’s dedication towards uplifting communities in need and creating a positive change in society.
