A Seat For Every Student
The Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya located in Galle is an underserved school which was once devastated by the 2004 Tsunami. The school therefore faces various shortages of resources required to provide a comfortable learning environment for students. One such deficit which was identified by afi cares was the inadequate quantity of chairs to furnish the school’s main hall. The school stated a requirement of 130 such chairs so that students may have their own seat when engaging in learning and recreational activities comfortably.
Objectives
A Seat For Every Student project aimed to:
- Increase the number of chairs within the school main hall;
- Improve the learning experience for students within their school;
- Improve the infrastructure capacity in an underserved school.
Implementation Methodology
The project was implemented through a collaborative approach involving the Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya school administration. The school selected based on identified need and accessibility for team members and vendors. The project consisted of a preliminary discussion and an execution phase where afi cares distributed chairs to students within the school main hall.
Outcomes
Through A Seat For Every Child project, afi cares was able to successfully increase the seating capacity at Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya and met approximately 43% of their initial requirement.
Challenges
The project encountered minor logistical challenges and faced obstacles in fully meeting the identified requirement due to the limited availability of resources.
