From Struggle to Strength: AFI Cares Empowers a Woman Entrepreneur

In April, we had the privilege of completing a deeply impactful CSR initiative in Kuliyapitiya, within the Udubaddawa Divisional Area. This project was part of our ongoing commitment to support communities and uplift individuals working hard to build better futures despite challenging circumstances. 

The beneficiary of this project was a determined widow who has been operating a small-scale business while raising her three young children. Despite her resilience and perseverance, she faced many obstacles due to a lack of resources and proper equipment, which limited her ability to grow the business. 

Understanding the importance of practical assistance, we stepped in to provide her with a much-needed mixture machine. This support will significantly improve her production capacity, allowing her to enhance the quality and scale of her operations. During our visit, we were able to see the business in action, and it was clear how transformative this equipment would be in her daily work. 

The project handover was attended by several government officials from the Divisional Secretariat office. Among them were the Assistant Divisional Secretary, the Social Development Officer, Divisional and Chief Grama Niladhari Officers, and other representatives. Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration between public institutions and private initiatives in driving meaningful social change. 

These officials expressed their sincere appreciation for the support provided. They highlighted that this initiative is not just about helping one individual, but about contributing to national development by empowering people at the grassroots level.  

Beyond improving the business, this initiative brings hope and stability to an entire family. The widow’s three children stand to benefit from the improved financial security and living conditions that a growing business can provide. It is a reminder that when we support one person, we often uplift many more. 

This AFI Care CSR initiative is one such example, showing how meaningful change can start with a single gesture of support.
