A Seat for Every Student

This February, the AFI Interns team led by Nafeen Naleem took on the opportunity to help improve an underserved school located in Galle, Sri Lanka. The Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya, which was once devastated by the 2004 Tsunami, was taking on the mammoth task of rebuilding and refurbishing their infrastructure to provide a better learning and teaching environment for their students and staff. Our team, noticing the urgent need for chairs to furnish their school main hall contributed their fullest so that every student may have a seat to learn and to engage in interactive activities within their school main hall.

Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya provides the necessary education to approximately 500 students who come from low-income families and are capable of leaving their mark at the national level with all-island accomplishments. It was truly an immense privilege for our team to contribute towards building a better learning environment to such talented students and help them thrive in their future educational journey by adding 55 chairs and increasing the seating capacity available for both students and staff of the school.

While this initiative by the AFI Interns team aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by strengthening equitable access to quality education and improving learning environments for underserved communities, the project made its biggest impact upon the SDG 04: Quality Education. Their venture contributed towards building and upgrading educational facilities which are safe, inclusive, and effective learning spaces for all students. By doing so, the project enhanced the physical and mental well-being of students and staff, successfully contributing to the SDG 03: Good Health and Well-being

By recognizing a simple yet critical need and responding with compassion and commitment, the AFI Interns team demonstrated how small, targeted interventions can create meaningful and lasting change, towards which we are deeply thankful. We extend our deepest gratitude to Mrs. M.N.F. Roshana, the Principal of Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya who facilitated this impactful project organized by our talented team.

This initiative is yet another embodiment of AFI Cares’ unwavering dedication towards improving the quality of life of underserved communities, making a positive impact and a meaningful difference one step at a time. Creating a wave of change that not only uplifts the education of children but also the future prospects of our nation, AFI Cares continues to empower communities, contribute towards national development, and build brighter future for generations to come.
