Dental Camp: Restoring Smiles and Providing Care to Two Elder’s Homes









April brought in new winds and prosperous happiness to two Elders Homes through AFI Cares. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka, we facilitated the provision of dental services to the St. Mary’s Home for the Elderly on 09th of April 2026 and the Lady Fareed Home for Elders on 27th of April 2026. 

The project provided access to qualified dentists and dental therapists along with the mobile dental bus from the Ministry of Health to assess the teeth health and gum health of the residents at the two elder’s homes. Furthermore, they provided dental services such as teeth cleaning – scaling – and teeth filling along with professional advice for maintaining better dental hygiene for the elderly. 

For many elderly residents, access to basic dental care services is often limited due to mobility issues despite oral health being deeply connected to overall health and well-being. AFI Cares sought to address this identified dire need of elders to address immediate dental concerns, assess their overall dental well-being, bringing comfort, reassurance, and happiness to the elders. This project thereby restored smiles, eased discomfort, and relieved pain of elders. It further ensured accessibility to elderly residents even in wheelchairs. Their satisfaction, praises, and blessings filled the hearts of our AFI Cares team members. 

The difference made by the project complies with and fulfills not only the needs and wishes of the elders but also the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly the SDG 03: Good Health and Well-being by improving access to essential oral healthcare services for elderly. It also reflects SDG 01: No Poverty, as many vulnerable elders in care homes face financial and social barriers to accessing quality healthcare, making such interventions vital in reducing inequalities. Furthermore, it ensured the health and well-being of vulnerable elders and improved their physical and mental health through the acts of care and compassion shown by our team.
