Tuan Hamlin Amith, a professional seamstress living in Kolonnawa, has spent years building a livelihood through hard work and resilience. As the sole caregiver for his 30-year old daughter with Down syndrome, Mr. Amith is unable to leave home for employment and instead relies entirely on his sewing skills to support his family.
For many years, he operated a modest dressmaking business from home, using a sewing machine gifted to him by the local masjid over 25 years ago. With a loyal customer base and steady orders, he was able to manage household needs and provide a sense of stability for his daughter. However, earlier this year, his aging machine broke down just ahead of the busy Ramazan season. Unable to complete orders, he lost customers and vital income, leaving the family in financial distress.
Moved by his story, AFI stepped in to provide Mr. Amith with a brand-new sewing machine. This support has already made a significant difference. With renewed energy and tools in hand, he has resumed working from home and is steadily rebuilding his customer base. His gratitude is heartfelt, noting that the machine is not just equipment; it is a fresh start and a source of dignity for a father doing everything he can for his family.
At AFI, we are proud to be part of stories like Mr. Amith’s, where compassion meets action and lives are transformed one step at a time.
