Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College’s First XV rugby team, Summa Rugby, is making headlines this season, not just for its explosive plays and fighting spirit, but for what it represents: The power of perseverance, passion and community support. Competing in the A Division, Sri Lanka’s highest tier of school rugby, the team has found a vital ally this season in AFI Corp, whose sponsorship has helped bridge longstanding resource gaps and elevate the team’s competitive edge.
Backed by Summa Rugby Integration, a non-profit formed by dedicated alumni, the team has steadily climbed the ranks over the years. Today, they are admired across the island for their fearless style of play and relentless work ethic—traits sharpened without even a ground or gym to call their own.
This season, the team is being captained by powerhouse Adithya Rathnayake, with Ifky Hameed and Yasiru Thiwanka as Co-Vice Captains. The team is trained by First XV Head/Forward Coach Malith Hettiarachchi, First XV Backs Coach Asanka Perera, First XV Assistant/Under 16 Head Coach Anush Kolonne and Trainer Mohan de Alwis.
“Most of our students come from low- and middle-income households, and they’ve achieved excellence despite significant limitations,” said Principal of Sri Sumangala College, Deshappriya Rathnayake. “To be among Sri Lanka’s best schools in rugby without the basic facilities others have speaks to their commitment and character. AFI Corp’s support has come at a crucial time and has contributed immensely to our ability to compete.”
Team captain Adithya Rathnayake, now in his final year, shared his personal journey with the sport. “I remember watching my brother play for the school when I was just a little kid. I started rugby in the Under-12s, and the sport has taught me the importance of both resilience and discipline. These are qualities we will carry with us into life after school.”
AFI Corp, a Sri Lanka-based international talent solutions and technology services provider, sees its partnership with Summa Rugby as part of a broader commitment to empowering youth and supporting long-term community growth.
“These young men are showing the country what it means to rise above circumstance,” said Rikaza Hassan, Head of Communications at AFI Corp. “Their story is one of raw potential meeting real opportunity. That’s what we aim to support at AFI Corp, and why we’re proud to stand with Summa Rugby this season.”
AFI Corp’s sponsorship of Summa Rugby aligns with its flagship corporate social responsibility initiative, AFI Cares. Rooted in the organization’s commitment to make a positive impact on society, AFI Cares was founded to support underserved communities and promote sustainable impact in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the 2025 Inter-School Rugby Season unfolds, Summa Rugby continues its campaign in the A-Division with determination and pride. With renewed energy on the field and strengthened support off it, the team remains focused on delivering their best, game after game. For the players, coaches, school community and sponsor AFI Corp, the season ahead promises not only tough competition, but a meaningful step forward in the journey of a team that refuses to be defined by limitations.
