AFI Corp Support Drives Summa Rugby’s Inspiring Season and Plate Championship Glory

AFI Corp proudly concludes its first year as Platinum Sponsor of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College’s First XV rugby team, Summa Rugby, on the highest of notes with a triumphant victory in the SLSRFA Elite U18 Rugby 7s Plate Championship. With this historic win, the team capped off a stellar campaign in the elite A-Division, closing the National Schools Rugby season with a defining achievement for the college and inspiring rugby fans and sports enthusiasts all around the country.

From being selected into the National Schools A-Division of Rugby to competing head-to-head with established rugby powerhouses from Colombo and Kandy and emerging at the end with the Plate Championship title, Summa Rugby’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Throughout the 2025 season, the team scored a series of landmark firsts for the school and proved that with the support of their backers, and the sheer determination and will of the players, anything is possible.

“AFI Corp’s hands-on support has been unprecedented and pushed the players to push themselves further than ever before,” said President of Summa Rugby Integration Sidath Chandrarathna. The alumni-driven association that has been instrumental in developing rugby at the school. “The entire season has been a monumental milestone, one that will inspire future squads and raise expectations for what Summa Rugby can accomplish. It’s proof that with the right backing, the team can compete with the best and set the stage for a stronger future.”

Summa Rugby Captain Adithya Rathnayake, who is closing out his final year in school rugby, described the sponsorship as transformational. “This was more than just a sponsorship. AFI Corp’s support gave us the strength to push harder, play fearlessly and believe in ourselves as much as others believed in us. To cap off my last season of schools rugby by winning the Plate Championship will always be a proud moment for me and the team, but knowing we carried the hopes of our school and our supporters makes it unforgettable.”

To celebrate the team’s achievements, AFI Corp hosted the players and coaching staff to a special dinner at The Kingsbury, Colombo. The evening underscored the company’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding dedication, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. Reflecting on the AFI Corp-Summa Rugby partnership, Principal of Sri Sumangala College Deshappriya Rathnayake stated: “This sponsorship has meant so much to the team and the school.
